Europe advances HYDEF project to counter hypersonic missile threats

European nations have completed the first phase of the HYDEF project, a collaborative initiative designed to develop an interceptor system capable of neutralizing hypersonic threats. The project aims to counter high-speed targets such as hypersonic cruise missiles, maneuvering ballistic missiles, and glide vehicles that operate within the atmosphere.

The first stage concluded on October 22 in Madrid, focusing on defining the interceptor architecture and system requirements. Technical objectives were reportedly exceeded, with integrated subsystems surpassing initial maturity goals. The project is now transitioning to a second phase, HYDEF2, which involves 41 organizations from 16 European countries.

A technological demonstrator is targeted for completion by 2030. While this milestone represents a significant engineering step toward proving the design in a relevant environment, a fully operational system will require further development and qualification beyond that date. The initiative seeks to reduce European reliance on foreign equipment to defend against advanced threats from Russia and China.
