Europe energy system faces pressure from heatwaves and low water levels

The European energy system is entering a period of increased pressure due to prolonged heatwaves and record-low water levels. EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen has warned of a ‘difficult situation’ as extreme temperatures impact both electricity supply and demand.

In Central and South-East Europe, demand is rising significantly due to the intensive use of air conditioning for homes, businesses, and industrial facilities. Simultaneously, low water levels are threatening production capacity by limiting hydroelectric power generation and complicating the cooling processes required for other power units.

Despite these pressures, there is currently no immediate risk of power outages or short-term supply shortages. However, the energy system will continue to operate with higher requirements and reduced flexibility as long as high temperatures persist.
