Europe faces challenges in defense capability and military deterrence

Experts at the European Forum Alpbach are discussing Europe's urgent need to enhance its defense capabilities and military deterrence. Antonella Mei-Pochtler, Vice President of the Forum, suggests that Europe's primary challenge is not a lack of resources, but rather a “translation problem” in how those resources are utilized.

Franz-Stefan Gady, an Associate Fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, emphasizes that peace must be secured through the credible threat of military force to deter potential aggressors like Russia. He notes a significant gap between current funding and the actual requirements of armed forces.

In Germany, the defense industry is experiencing a structural surge in demand due to the shifting security landscape in Europe. While companies like Rheinmetall and Hensoldt are seeing growing order books and expanded capacities, the market response is becoming more complex as the industry enters a new phase of evaluation.
