Europe faces defense funding dilemma at Warsaw Security Forum
At the Warsaw Security Forum, financial experts highlighted the challenges Europe faces in funding military preparedness without compromising social welfare. The debate centered on the dilemma of choosing between defense spending and social stability, often described as the choice between “weapons or butter.”
Experts noted that the era of cheap loans has ended and criticized European bureaucracy for being too slow to meet the realities of modern warfare. To address this, the European Investment Bank has begun engaging in the defense sector. Mikołaj Dowgielewicz, Director General of the bank, stated that while the institution is accountable to global bondholders, its ownership by EU member states has facilitated this previously unthinkable shift toward defense investment.
