Europe faces extreme heatwaves and rising mortality
Europe is experiencing intense and successive heatwaves, warming at twice the global average rate. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, these extreme temperatures are becoming a new reality for the continent, driven by factors such as greenhouse gas emissions and changes in the Arctic.
The human impact has been severe; EuroMOMO data indicates that heat-related issues contributed to 10,650 deaths in June alone, primarily affecting the elderly by exacerbating cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Record-breaking temperatures have been documented across the region, including 41.7°C in Germany, 41.2°C in Austria, and 40.7°C in Barcelona, Spain.
Beyond health concerns, the heat is driving significant economic and lifestyle shifts. Eurostat reports that residential cooling energy consumption has doubled in six years, straining power grids. There is a surging demand for refrigeration equipment; for instance, France saw approximately 1.9 million cooling units sold in a few weeks, leading to stock shortages. While southern European countries like Spain and Italy have high rates of home cooling systems, northern nations like the United Kingdom are seeing a rapid increase in demand.
