Europe potato harvest faces major shortage due to extreme heat

Europe is facing a significant potato shortage as extreme summer heat and drought devastate harvests across the continent. According to analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), production in major growing regions—including Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands—is expected to drop to between 19.5 and 20.5 million tonnes, down from a previous high of 27.3 million tonnes.

The crisis is driven by two main factors: direct crop damage from five intense heatwaves, which destroyed an estimated 3.1 million tonnes of potatoes, and a reduction in planted acreage. Following a period of surplus and low prices last year, many farmers chose to reduce the area dedicated to potato cultivation.

The economic impact is substantial, with estimated losses ranging from €400 million to over €800 million. This supply contraction is already driving up prices; for instance, industrial potato prices in Germany have climbed to approximately €240 per tonne. The shortage is expected to affect the entire supply chain, from snack and frozen food manufacturers to restaurants and household consumers.
