The summer of 2026 has officially been recorded as the warmest in the Netherlands since meteorological measurements began in 1901. According to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), the average temperature at the De Bilt station reached 19.3 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record set in 2018.

Key climate milestones included a record number of tropical days and nine days where temperatures exceeded 35 degrees Celsius. In Maastricht, a new record was set with three consecutive nights where temperatures did not drop below 22 degrees Celsius. Experts note that the warming trend is accelerating, with current extreme temperatures potentially becoming the norm by 2050.

The extreme heat and accompanying drought have caused significant environmental strain. In Leeuwarden, approximately 5,300 trees are reported to be in poor condition. To mitigate future risks of both drought and flooding, Waterschap Vechtstromen has entered a partnership with German municipalities to improve water retention and management along the Vecht river.
