Europe faces rising debt in Italy and new trade tensions with China

European nations are facing significant economic and geopolitical challenges. In Italy, concerns are rising regarding a potential debt crisis. The government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently approved an additional 28 billion euro in funding for defense and energy spending over the next two years. Goldman Sachs warns that this increased spending could push Italy's budget deficit targets to 3.4% of GDP by 2027 and 3.2% by 2028. Analysts suggest Italy's debt-to-GDP ratio could rise to approximately 137% by 2028, potentially making it the highest in Europe.

Simultaneously, France and Germany have proposed the creation of an emergency trade mechanism to the European Commission. Described as a ‘red button’ tool, this mechanism would allow for rapid market access restrictions within 24 hours to counter perceived economic aggression from China. The proposal seeks to launch cross-sector anti-dumping investigations into Chinese electric vehicles, chemicals, and machinery to reduce Europe's critical dependence on Chinese supply chains.
