EU economic stability and China trade tensions
Overview
European economic stability and trade relations with China have become central points of concern. In Italy, increased government spending on defense and energy has led to warnings from Goldman Sachs that the budget deficit could reach 3.4% of GDP by 2027, potentially resulting in the highest debt-to-GDP ratio in Europe by 2028.
To counter economic pressures, France and Germany proposed an emergency trade mechanism to the European Commission, described as a ‘red button’ tool to allow rapid market access restrictions against Chinese economic aggression. This proposal targeted sectors such as electric vehicles, chemicals, and machinery to reduce supply chain dependence.
Following these tensions, the European Union secured an agreement with China to cap hybrid vehicle imports at 350,000 units annually. This measure follows a rapid increase in the market share of Chinese hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Europe, which rose from 2% in 2024 to 25% by the first half of 2026. Concurrently, the IMF has urged global fiscal shifts, calling on China to increase domestic spending and Europe to boost competitiveness to address growing global economic imbalances.
