Europe faces record heat and wildfires
Europe is experiencing a record-breaking summer characterized by extreme heatwaves and devastating wildfires. According to the Copernicus climate change service, the 24-hour average temperature for June and July reached a historic 21.62 degrees Celsius, marking the hottest period on record.
Wildfires have scorched over 550,000 hectares across the continent, with significant destruction reported in France and Spain. In France, over 160,000 hectares have burned, including a major front near Bordeaux. Spain has declared a national state of emergency for the first time in its history to coordinate resources against the fires. The extreme heat has also had a severe human toll, with Bloomberg research estimating approximately 25,000 heat-related deaths across Spain, France, the UK, the Netherlands, and Switzerland this year.
Experts note that the frequency of days conducive to wildfires has more than doubled in much of Europe since the 1980s. While climate change is a primary driver, human negligence and intentional acts remain significant causes of ignition. The combination of rising temperatures, drought, and shifting land management has increased the vulnerability of European territories to these intensifying seasonal disasters.
