Romania expands renewable energy through solar and hydrogen projects

Romania is experiencing a significant expansion in its renewable energy sector, particularly in solar and green hydrogen. The Romanian Senate recently approved legislation to integrate renewable and low-carbon hydrogen into transport and industrial sectors, a move linked to a National Recovery and Resilience Plan milestone worth over EUR 1 billion. This law aims to align the country with EU requirements, mandating that fuel suppliers ensure at least 1% of supplied fuel comes from renewable sources by 2030.

Major infrastructure projects are underway, including a planned 1.24 GW solar park in Arad by Rezolv Energy. If completed by 2030, this facility could become the largest in the European Union, potentially powering over 280,000 households. Additionally, Brașov Renewables is investing over 140 million lei in a photovoltaic park on Calea Feldioarei, supported by capital from Medscope Holding and Alive Capital.

The solar market is also seeing increased commercial activity, marked by the first solar-profile electricity transaction on the Romanian Commodity Exchange (BRM). While projections for 2026 suggest a robust market with installed solar capacity potentially exceeding 5 GW, challenges remain, including bureaucratic hurdles, infrastructure limitations, and the need for legislative evolution to support prosumers.
