Europe heatwave claims over 1,000 deaths, France hardest hit

A severe heatwave sweeping Western Europe in June 2026 pushed temperatures to 44 °C in parts of France, with many countries recording highs above 40 °C. France’s public‑health agency activated its highest emergency level, ORSAN‑3, and warned that more than 1,000 deaths could occur, part of a continental toll now estimated at over 1,300 lives.

The World Health Organization highlighted the event as a major health crisis, noting that extreme heat exacerbates heart disease, diabetes, respiratory conditions and increases risk of dehydration and heatstroke, especially among the elderly, children and outdoor workers. Several European nations—including Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland, Portugal and Austria—have issued heat alerts and urged precautionary measures as the heat dome persists.

Officials stress that climate‑related heat extremes are becoming more frequent, urging both immediate public‑health responses and longer‑term mitigation strategies.
