Extreme weather shifts and regional volatility in Turkey
Overview
By early September 2026, Turkey’s weather patterns continued to exhibit extreme regional diversity. In the south, provinces such as Muğla and Antalya maintained summer-like heat, with temperatures reaching as high as 40 degrees Celsius.
Conversely, the northern and eastern Black Sea coast, including Rize, Trabzon, and Artvin, faced severe meteorological warnings. ‘Yellow code’ warnings were issued for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, flooding, and landslides. In response to these risks, the Trabzon Governor’s Office implemented a ban on sea swimming on September 7. In Elazığ, sudden heavy rain and hail caused localized flooding, while Nevşehir experienced sharp temperature fluctuations.
By September 7, weather shifts became more pronounced in high-altitude areas. Snowfall was recorded in the Çamlıhemşin district, covering the Kaçkar Mountains and the Yukarı Kavrun Plateau at 2,300 meters, prompting plateau dwellers to prepare for their return to villages. The General Directorate of Meteorology issued warnings for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across the central and eastern Black Sea regions, specifically Sinop, Samsun, Ordu, Giresun, Trabzon, Rize, and Artvin. Strong winds of 40 to 60 km/h were also forecasted for southern Marmara, the northern Aegean, southeastern Central Anatolia, and parts of the Eastern Mediterranean and Eastern Anatolia, with risks of falling trees or roofs.
By September 10, temperatures were expected to remain above seasonal norms. Significant heat was forecasted for central and eastern regions, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius in Denizli, 36 degrees in Şanlıurfa, and 35 degrees in both Adana and Diyarbakır. In the Marmara region, skies remained mostly clear, with Istanbul reaching 28 degrees Celsius.
