Turkey heatwave eases, rain arrives, heat persists July 2026
Entities: Istanbul · Rize · Antalya · Şanlıurfa · Giresun
Overview
The cool, moist air mass from the Balkans that began sweeping Turkey in the second half of July has brought heavy rain and strong gusts to Istanbul, the Marmara region and the Black Sea coast. Rain started on 22 July, intensified with thunderstorms on 23 July, and began to subside by Monday, producing local flooding, roof and tree damage and prompting temporary bans on sea‑entry in several Istanbul districts. Temperatures dropped sharply, with Istanbul falling to 20‑24 °C and Ankara to around 20 °C, an 8‑10 °C decline from the preceding days.
Despite the cooling trend, extreme heat persisted in the south‑east and along the Mediterranean. Antalya recorded a felt 44 °C on 22 July, while cities such as Kahramanmaraş, Mersin, Diyarbakır and Van saw daytime highs above 40 °C. Health officials issued warnings for vulnerable groups, promoted hydration and opened cooling centres – including “snow rooms” kept at –2 °C. Municipalities limited non‑essential outdoor work and encouraged shade‑seeking.
The heat continued to drive demand for air‑conditioners. By 24 July, Van temperatures had eased to around 30 °C, yet retailers reported a surge in new‑unit sales and maintenance requests, with consumers treating ACs as both cooling and heating devices. In Diyarbakır, daytime highs remained above 40 °C, prompting many merchants to postpone opening until after 15:00 and to appeal for additional government support.
Forecasts for 27 July indicated a return to seasonal warmth, with temperatures reaching 37 °C or higher in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions, Istanbul expected around 29 °C and Ankara near 26 °C. Light to moderate southerly and northerly winds were anticipated, and localized showers with occasional thunderstorms were forecast for the Black Sea coast. No meteorological warnings were issued.
