Europe heatwave impacts visible from space via satellite
Satellite imagery from the Copernicus climate monitoring service reveals the severe environmental impact of recent heatwaves across Western Europe. Data indicates that the June-July period was the warmest on record for the region.
Significant ecological changes are visible from space, including retreating glaciers, drying riverbeds, and widespread wildfires. In Switzerland, the Rhône glacier's front has retreated by at least 50 meters compared to the previous year. The Danube River has dropped to its lowest levels in 30 years in several countries, exposing historical artifacts such as mammoth bones in Bulgaria and a WWII shipwreck in Serbia.
Water shortages have also impacted infrastructure; the Rhine has seen cargo ships stranded and cruises canceled, while nuclear power plants near the Danube have had to limit operations due to cooling water difficulties. In France, wildfires have burned over 90,000 hectares, marking the worst year for the country. Since May 2026, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been activated over 30 times to provide data for various countries facing fire and drought crises.
