Europe heatwaves cause at least 35,000 excess deaths

Extreme heatwaves across Europe this summer have resulted in at least 35,000 excess deaths, according to preliminary data. Experts warn the final toll will likely rise as August data is fully processed.

Germany reported the highest number of fatalities, with the Robert Koch Institute estimating approximately 14,000 deaths between early April and early August. Spain has also seen a significant impact, with the Carlos III Health Institute reporting nearly 5,000 deaths since May, surpassing its previous record from 2022.

In France, more than 7,000 excess deaths were reported between late May and late July. Italy is seeing similar trends, with modeling suggesting between 5,000 and 8,000 deaths, while the United Kingdom recorded approximately 2,900 heat-associated deaths during May and June. Other countries, including Belgium, Poland, and Switzerland, have also reported increases in mortality linked to high temperatures.
