Europe seeks alternatives to Palantir amid digital sovereignty push

European officials, led by France and Germany, are intensifying efforts to replace the United States data‑analytics firm Palantir, whose software is embedded in police, intelligence, military and health systems across the continent. The initiative aims to build a sovereign European digital infrastructure, promoting home‑grown firms such as France’s ChapsVision and the emerging Artemis AI defence system.

Experts warn that abandoning Palantir will be difficult because its platforms process massive data volumes with capabilities that NATO says have no equal among current European offerings. While France and Germany have begun procurement reforms, the United Kingdom faces a decision on a £330 million contract for the National Health Service’s federated data platform. Critics argue that reliance on a private American company poses security and democratic risks, whereas Palantir defends its role in supporting democratic states.
