On July 30‑31 2026 a series of wildfires swept Greece, burning across Crete, Paros, Lesbos, the Cyclades and mainland regions. Strong winds reaching up to 80 mph (Beaufort 9) hampered firefighting and stopped aerial water drops.

Three Greek firefighters died while fighting the blazes – two in the Rethymno area of Crete and one near the Peloponnese port of Gytheio. Around 8,000 residents were evacuated from villages on Crete’s Rethymno region and from Paros as flames threatened homes and holiday resorts.

A Category 4 (Very High) wildfire risk had been forecast for the affected regions on July 31, prompting bans on outdoor barbecues, burning vegetation, fireworks and other fire‑risk activities. More than 220 firefighters, eleven special forest units and 53 fire engines were deployed, and the EU Copernicus emergency‑mapping service provided satellite imagery to aid the response.
