Europe winter outlook: milder season as Atlantic cold anomaly expands

Meteorologists report that early winter forecasts point to a milder than average season for Europe. Analyses show a cold anomaly spreading in the North Atlantic, with temperatures along the Gulf Stream several degrees below last year, while a strong Super El Niño is developing in the tropical Pacific. The combined pattern is expected to bring higher pressure and warmer air over much of Europe, but also to generate colder air surges over central, southern and eastern United States and Canada. The forecasts are described as preliminary and based on oceanic and atmospheric data that suggest the Atlantic cold “blob” could persist until 2027.
