European airlines implement major winter route cuts for 2026/27

Major European airlines are restructuring their flight networks for the 2026/27 winter season, implementing significant route cuts and suspensions to maintain profitability amid economic pressures.

Volotea is removing 32 routes, with a heavy impact on the French market. Key cancellations include several connections between French cities and the Canary Islands, such as Bordeaux to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote to various French hubs. Italian cities like Naples, Bari, and Rome are also seeing reductions in connections to France.

Similarly, easyJet is adjusting its network by suppressing or suspending 73 routes. This includes the permanent cancellation of the Birmingham–Milan Linate route and the Paris CDG–Catania service. Numerous other routes involving Italian destinations like Venice, Palermo, Naples, and Verona will face temporary suspensions during the winter months.

In Reggio Calabria, Ryanair is also remodeling its operations at the Tito Minniti airport. Analysts suggest these shifts are driven by seasonal demand fluctuations and the need to reallocate aircraft to more profitable markets, highlighting the challenge for regional airports to maintain year-round international connectivity.
