European anti‑ballistic missile coalition formed without Poland

Ten European states – Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom – signed a new defence pact in Paris, creating an Anti‑ballistic Missile Coalition. The alliance will develop joint capabilities for intercepting ballistic missiles and is described as a purely defensive initiative.

Poland was not among the signatories. Polish officials say that negotiations, coordinated by the foreign, defence and state‑asset ministries, broke down after talks with Ukraine in April. Sejm Marshal Włodzimierz Czarzasty suggested that Kyiv may have blocked Poland’s membership, while the government pointed to the lack of a concrete Polish defence‑industry offer as the main reason. Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said Poland could still join the coalition once a suitable industrial proposal is presented.

The dispute highlights tensions between Warsaw and Kyiv over defence cooperation, even as the coalition moves forward with technical working groups to define operational requirements and management structures.
