European businesses transition to mandatory electronic invoicing

European and regional business landscapes are undergoing a significant shift toward mandatory electronic invoicing. Driven by the European Union’s ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age) initiative, the transition aims to standardize digital reporting and VAT processes across the EU. A key technological component of this evolution is the PEPPOL network, which provides the communication infrastructure for the secure and standardized exchange of electronic documents.

In Slovakia, new regulations will mandate electronic invoicing in a specific format starting in 2027. This requirement applies to all legal entities and taxable persons, including entrepreneurs, lawyers, and real estate lessors. Under these rules, a standard PDF or scanned document will no longer suffice; instead, invoices must be submitted as structured XML files to allow for automated data processing. Failure to comply with these new standards could result in significant financial penalties, ranging from 10,000 to 100,000 euros for repeated violations.
