European Central Bank announces euro banknote redesign

The European Central Bank (ECB) is preparing the first major redesign of euro banknotes since 2002. The project, slated for 2026, aims to modernize the currency's appearance while enhancing security features against counterfeiting and improving accessibility for visually impaired individuals.

As part of the process, the ECB has launched a public consultation, open until September 21, allowing citizens to vote on ten final design themes. These themes are divided into two categories: “European Culture” and “Rivers and Birds.”

If the cultural theme is selected, historical figures such as Maria Skłodowska-Curie, Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci, and Bertha von Suttner may appear on various denominations. If the nature-based theme wins, the designs will focus on biodiversity, featuring elements like birds and rivers. A final decision on the winning design direction is expected by the end of the year.
