European Central Bank begins major redesign of euro banknotes
The European Central Bank (ECB) has initiated a major visual redesign of euro banknotes, marking the first significant overhaul since the currency's introduction. The project aims to modernize the notes with enhanced security features and more relatable imagery to better connect with European citizens.
Ten shortlisted designs have been selected based on two primary themes: ‘European Culture’ and ‘Rivers and Birds’. The former focuses on historical figures in art, music, science, and literature, while the latter emphasizes natural elements like birds and rivers. The ECB has launched a public survey to allow citizens to vote on these themes, with the final design expected to be announced in December 2026.
Despite the rise of digital payments and the development of a digital euro, the ECB emphasizes that physical cash will not be replaced. Doris Schneeberger, the ECB's director of banknotes, stated that the redesign reinforces the role of cash as a vital form of public money. New banknotes are not expected to enter circulation until approximately 2029, and existing notes will continue to be valid alongside the new series.
