European Central Bank faces leadership race following Schnabel resignation

The European Central Bank (ECB) is facing a period of leadership transition following the resignation of board member Isabel Schnabel. Schnabel has announced she will leave her position to join the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department in 2027.

This departure has accelerated discussions regarding future leadership at the ECB. While President Christine Lagarde’s term is scheduled to end in October 2027, speculation persists regarding a potential earlier resignation to lead the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Negotiations among eurozone governments regarding succession are already underway. Current frontrunners for the ECB presidency include Klaas Knot, the former president of the Dutch central bank, and Pablo Hernandez de Cos.
