European Central Bank unveils new euro banknote design finalists
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten finalist designs for a new generation of euro banknotes and launched a public consultation to involve citizens in the selection process. This marks the first complete visual redesign of the currency since its introduction in 2002.
Following a competition with over 1,200 applicants, a jury of 21 experts selected ten concepts based on two central themes: ‘European Culture’ and ‘Rivers and Birds’. If the culture theme prevails, potential figures on the notes could include Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, and Leonardo da Vinci. The redesign aims to enhance security against advanced counterfeiting technologies, such as AI-driven forgery, and improve accessibility for the visually impaired.
While the visual identity is changing, the physical dimensions and primary colors will remain consistent to ensure compatibility with existing ATMs and payment devices. The ECB expects to make a final decision by the end of 2026, with the new notes entering circulation in the following years. Despite the rise of cashless payments, ECB research and banking data indicate that cash remains a vital component of daily transactions for a significant portion of the eurozone population.
