European Central Bank launches public vote for new euro banknote designs

The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a public survey inviting citizens to vote on design proposals for a new series of euro banknotes. This marks the first complete redesign of the currency since its introduction in 2002.

Ten design proposals have been shortlisted from over 1,200 applications submitted by graphic designers across the European Union. An independent jury of 21 experts in fields such as neuroscience, history, and graphic design selected the finalists. The designs are organized around two primary themes: ‘European Culture,’ which celebrates shared cultural spaces and historical figures, and ‘Rivers and Birds,’ which highlights Europe’s natural ecosystems and environmental diversity.

The new banknotes aim to be more modern, recognizable, and secure, while also incorporating more sustainable manufacturing processes. The public voting period is open until September 21, 2026.
