European Central Bank holds vote on new Euro banknote designs
The European Central Bank (ECB) is conducting an online survey to allow citizens to vote on the design of future Euro banknotes. The voting period is scheduled to close on Monday, September 21, 2026. More than nine million people have already participated in the poll.
Ten shortlisted designs have been proposed, categorized into two primary themes:
1. “European Culture”: This theme features famous historical figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Curie, and Ludwig van Beethoven on the front, with depictions of everyday European scenes, like street performers or choirs, on the back.
2. “Rivers and Birds”: This theme focuses on the resilience and diversity of Europe’s natural ecosystems, featuring various bird species and their habitats. The reverse side would depict European institutions, such as the European Parliament and the ECB.
The survey results will serve as a guide for the ECB Governing Council, which is expected to make a final decision by the end of 2026. The new banknotes will include enhanced security features to combat counterfeiting and are expected to enter circulation gradually starting in 2029.
