European Central Bank to pilot digital euro across Europe in 2027

The European Central Bank (ECB) announced that a pilot of the digital euro will begin in 2027, targeting the entire population of the euro area. The pilot will be overseen by Pierro Cippolone, head of the ECB’s Digital Euro Task Force, and discussed during a hearing of the European Parliament’s ECON committee with Greek MEP Nikos Papandreou.

The test phase will focus on citizen acceptance and functionality in real‑world conditions, giving special attention to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people with disabilities. An initial public‑information campaign will launch alongside the pilot, with a broader outreach effort planned for 2028 in cooperation with national central banks and private‑sector partners.

The digital euro is intended to complement cash and existing electronic payment methods, offering a secure, Europe‑controlled means of transaction. Success will be measured by user experience and the degree of public trust generated during the trial.
