Europe faces widespread youth protests over cost of living and housing

Young people across multiple European nations are conducting widespread demonstrations driven by rising living costs, housing unaffordability, and stagnant wages. The protests have spread through countries including France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Greece, and Portugal.

In France, at least 550,000 people participated in protests on October 17. Similar movements were observed in Greece, where more than 10,000 people rallied. In Portugal, housing activists in Porto have reported increased tensions following police interventions during peaceful demonstrations.

Experts note that these movements are largely uncoordinated and lack a single central leadership. Alberto Alemanno, a professor at HEC Paris Business School, describes the unrest as a signal that citizens no longer trust existing systems to deliver economic security. The demonstrations reflect deep-seated frustrations with economic inequality and the perceived inability of traditional institutions to address the widening gap between wages and the cost of essential services like housing.
