European Code Week initiatives promote digital literacy in schools

Various educational institutions are participating in European Code Week and eTwinning programs to introduce children to programming and computational thinking through experiential learning.

In Brno, Czechia, an international seminar titled ‘The Future Begins at Schools’ brought together eTwinning ambassadors from countries including Cyprus, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The discussions focused on preparing students and educators for a technology-driven world, emphasizing that while artificial intelligence is a valuable tool for lesson planning and inclusion, true learning requires critical thinking, responsibility, and emotional maturity.

In Greece, several kindergartens implemented hands-on activities to teach algorithmic thinking. These included ‘unplugged’ coding exercises using color mixing and art-inspired projects based on Yayoi Kusama, as well as interactive sessions using Bee-Bot robots. These activities aim to teach children how to solve problems, follow sequences, and use technology as a tool for creativity and logical reasoning.
