EU Code Week 2026 digital literacy initiative

Overview

The EU Code Week 2026, a European initiative focused on digital literacy, computational thinking, and artificial intelligence, is being held from October 10 to 25. In Italy, the Fondazione LINKS, an applied research institute of the Politecnico di Torino, serves as the national hub. The foundation has expanded its network of Leading Teachers from 35 to 70 since 2024 to reach approximately 950,000 people.

To further integrate the initiative into national school curricula, Fondazione LINKS has established a collaboration with INDIRE, appointing Margherita Di Stasio as the Edu Coordinator. Supported by Ambassador Alessandro Bogliolo and HUB Coordinator Lucia Terrone, the initiative encourages participation from schools ranging from kindergarten to high school. Activities include educational robotics and ‘unplugged coding exercises’ where children use physical movement to simulate algorithms.

Beyond Italy, the initiative includes international seminars and diverse classroom activities. In Brno, Czechia, an eTwinning seminar titled ‘The Future Begins at Schools’ gathered ambassadors from countries including Cyprus, Germany, Italy, and Spain to discuss preparing students for a technology-driven world. In Greece, kindergartens have implemented hands-on activities, such as art-inspired projects and Bee-Bot robot sessions, to teach algorithmic thinking and problem-solving.
