European Commission authorizes seven GM crops for import
The European Commission has authorized or renewed authorizations for seven genetically modified (GM) crops for import and processing within the European Union. These decisions, set for 2026, cover four soybean events and three corn events intended for use in the food and feed industries.
While these authorizations allow for the market introduction of products containing or consisting of these GM crops, they do not permit their cultivation within EU territory. The authorizations are granted for a 10-year period. Specific soybean varieties include MON 94637, GMB151 × DAS-44406-6, and MON 94313, while the corn authorizations include DP202216 × NK603 × DAS-40278-9, alongside renewals for NK603 × T25 and MON 87460.
The decisions follow scientific evaluations by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In several instances, member state committees failed to reach a consensus, leading the Commission to finalize the decisions. Some member states cited the precautionary principle, negative public opinion, or a lack of a common national position as reasons for their stance.
