European Commission closes infringement case on Slovakia and issues multiple warnings to Slovenia

The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it has closed two infringement procedures against Slovakia. The first concerned amendments to the whistle‑blower protection law that would have transformed the Office for the Protection of Whistleblowers; the Commission said the disputed changes were withdrawn before taking effect, resolving the concerns. The second case related to discriminatory fuel‑price rules for vehicles registered outside Slovakia, which were also revoked, prompting the Commission to end the procedure.

In a separate action, the Commission issued several formal notices to Slovenia for the inadequate transposition of EU legislation on anti‑money laundering, data protection, the execution of European arrest warrants, and intelligent transport systems. Slovenia has two months to adopt the required measures. The Commission warned that Slovenia's new mandatory grounds for refusing execution of European arrest warrants could undermine the uniform application of EU law.

Both steps demonstrate the Commission’s ongoing monitoring and enforcement of member‑state compliance with EU rules.
