European Commission develops climate resilience strategy
The European Commission is developing new strategic frameworks to address the increasing impact of climate change across the continent. Following a period where wildfires consumed nearly 680,000 hectares of land in the EU and heatwaves were linked to over 35,000 additional deaths, the Commission President has announced initiatives focused on climate resilience and a European water initiative.
Data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) indicates that over 2,100 large fires occurred between January and late September, affecting countries including Belgium, France, Spain, Greece, Croatia, and Ireland. These fires have resulted in the loss of approximately 12 million crops.
Policymakers are emphasizing the need for human management in nature, such as forest management, to mitigate risks. Discussions include the deployment of advanced technologies, such as infrared drones, to monitor high-risk areas in Southern Europe and improve fire prevention efforts.
