European Commission launches infringement actions against several EU states

The European Commission has opened infringement procedures against a number of EU Member States. It sent letters of formal notice to Finland and France for failing to correctly transpose the Waste Framework Directive and the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive, giving each country two months to respond before a possible reasoned opinion is issued.

The Commission also issued formal notices to Cyprus, Malta and Finland, and reasoned opinions to Croatia, Italy, Austria, Portugal and Romania for not notifying the transposition of Directive (EU) 2024/2839, which reduces reporting requirements for economic operators. The states have the same two‑month deadline to address the Commission’s concerns, after which they may be referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union for possible financial sanctions.
