European Commission moves to curb US tech use amid data protection scrutiny

The European Data Protection Board, led by chair Anu Talus, sent a letter to EU Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath asking the Commission to reassess the EU‑US data‑adequacy decision (EU 2023/1795) after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the FTC is not independent. The Board highlighted that the Court’s decision undermines a key condition for the adequacy finding and urged a review of the Commission’s implementing act.

Separately, the European Commission announced it is considering replacing the U.S. cloud and AI services used in a new digital recruitment tool, the “Job Matching Application,” with European sovereign cloud providers. The tool, currently hosted on Amazon Web Services and using Anthropic’s Claude language model, may be moved to one of four European providers—StackIT, OVHcloud, Scaleway or S3NS—under a €180 million cloud‑framework contract, and the Commission plans to test European large‑language‑model alternatives.
