European Commission prepares study to end seasonal time changes
The European Commission is launching a new study to assist member states in deciding whether to abolish the seasonal switching between summer and winter time. This initiative follows a 2018 proposal that has remained stalled in the Council of the European Union for eight years due to a lack of consensus among member states regarding whether to adopt permanent summer or winter time.
The upcoming research aims to examine the economic, social, and environmental impacts of ending the practice. While the European Parliament supported the abolition of time changes in 2019, member states have struggled to reach an agreement, citing concerns over potential coordination issues in transport, business, and international relations if different countries choose different permanent time zones.
In the interim, European countries continue the biannual transition. On October 25, clocks were set back one hour to return to winter time, a move that affects daily rhythms, sleep patterns, and various sectors including transportation and energy usage.
