European Commission pressures Poland over energy laws as Senate passes RES amendment
The European Commission has issued a formal notice to 18 member states, including Poland, for failing to transpose the EU directive on energy sharing and freedom of choice of supplier by the July 17, 2026, deadline. The directive aims to allow households, small businesses, and public entities to share renewable energy within specific geographic or price zones to strengthen consumer positions. Member states have two months to respond and complete the transposition or face potential legal action in the Court of Justice of the EU.
In a separate domestic development, the Polish Senate has unanimously passed an amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) Act. Prepared by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the amendment introduces an auction system for biomethane production facilities exceeding 1 MW and regulates biogas transmission pipelines. The legislation also aims to support prosumers by simplifying energy storage usage and refining energy settlement rules, while improving the efficiency of energy cooperatives.
