European Commission proposes restoring Brazil poultry and honey imports
The European Commission has announced its intention to propose re-listing Brazil for the import of poultry meat and honey. This move follows an audit of Brazil’s sanitary controls, which officials described as having “positive” results.
The proposal is expected to be put to a vote by EU member states at the committee’s next meeting in November. The decision comes after an EU ban on several Brazilian animal products took effect in September, driven by requirements to ensure prohibited antimicrobial substances are not used in production.
While the Commission intends to restore access for poultry and honey, it does not currently plan to re-list bovine products. Brazil has not yet been able to reliably certify compliance with the EU’s lifetime requirements regarding antimicrobials for beef. The current restrictions on beef and other products could impact up to $2 billion in annual Brazilian exports.
