European Commission queried over unpaid Greek livestock compensation

European Parliament member Sakis Arnautoglou of PASOK has submitted an inquiry to the European Commission regarding outstanding compensation for Greek livestock farmers affected by zoonotic diseases. While the Greek government announced a payment of €16.84 million to 2,806 farms on August 27, 2026, to cover income losses from diseases such as bluetongue, contagious caprine pleuropneumonia, and fever in Lesvos, total compensations have reached approximately €45.34 million.

Arnautoglou is seeking clarification on the number of farms that remain unpaid, their regional distribution, and a specific timeline for the settlement of outstanding cases. He noted a lack of transparency, stating that while the government announces how many have been paid, it fails to disclose how many producers are still waiting. The inquiry also seeks to identify additional European funding opportunities to ensure full coverage of eligible losses.
