Greek livestock disease and compensation response
Overview
In August 2026, the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food expanded its financial response to livestock diseases. Minister Margaritis Schoinas approved approximately €16.8 million in compensation for income losses across 2,806 holdings during the first half of 2026, targeting sheep and goat scab, African Swine Fever, and classical swine fever. Total compensation for income loss has now reached over €45.3 million.
In Lesvos, the African Swine Fever crisis has caused significant economic and social unrest. Within five months of the initial outbreak, over €7 million has been allocated, including €3.5 million for livestock mortality, €2.6 million for 15 dairy enterprises, and €1.3 million for income replacement. Epidemiological data indicates that 184 outbreaks have been identified, resulting in the culling of 81,060 animals.
The crisis triggered intense protests in Mytilene, where farmers disrupted a North Aegean Regional Council meeting. This unrest led to the resignations of the Director of the Veterinary Service and the Vice Regional Governor for the Primary Sector. In response to the escalating tension, the Council decided to temporarily suspend all animal culls and blood sampling until at least September 6, 2026.
Concurrently, agricultural officials continue to discuss seeking European Union adjustments to allow for the reconstitution of livestock capital lost to extreme weather and disease, as well as compensation for stored animal feed. Deputy Minister Athanasios Kavvadas remains focused on a nationwide preventive strategy to strengthen biosecurity against cross-border infections.
