EU Commission Rejects Save Europe Act Migration Initiative

The European Commission announced that it will not register the citizens' initiative "Save Europe Act", which seeks a temporary moratorium on non‑Western migration and the creation of an EU‑wide remigration framework. The Commission said the proposal discriminates on the basis of race and ethnic origin and is therefore contrary to Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union and Article 21 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The initiative, launched by Dutch political commentator Eva Vlaardingerbroek and Austrian activist Martin Sellner, had collected close to 600,000 signatures from across EU member states. Its supporters argue that mass migration threatens the cultural and demographic continuity of European nations. In response to the rejection, organizers vowed legal action, saying they will take the case to the EU Court and continue gathering signatures to reach the one‑million threshold required for formal consideration.

Commission officials emphasized that respect for national identities does not permit measures that breach fundamental EU values, while campaign leaders criticized the decision as an “outrageous violation of democratic rights” and pledged to keep the fight alive.
