European Commission responds to President Erhürman regarding Cyprus tensions
The European Commission has responded to a letter sent by President Tufan Erhürman regarding the obstruction of music festivals and a football training camp in Barcelona. In the letter, originally sent on August 28, 2026, Erhürman characterized these actions by Greek Cypriot leadership as “confidence-eroding” and expressed concerns regarding their impact on the United Nations peace process.
The Commission stated that it has “carefully noted” the concerns raised by the Turkish Cypriot side and the potential implications for the UN process. Referencing a recent visit to the island by the UN Secretary-General, the Commission emphasized the importance of establishing trust and fostering a positive atmosphere between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots to create a suitable environment for negotiations.
Furthermore, the Commission referenced a 2004 European Council decision regarding the ending of isolation for Turkish Cypriots. It stated that its objective is to build bridges, develop dialogue, and facilitate rapprochement between Turkish Cypriots, Greek Cypriots, and the European Union. The response noted that civil society and private organizations contributing to the socio-economic development of Turkish Cypriots are aligned with the goals of the 2004 decision.
