European Commission study finds €714 million consumer benefit from competition enforcement in Greece
The European Commission published a new study, “Estimating customer savings generated by competition enforcement in the EU”, which quantifies the economic advantages of competition‑law actions. Using the consumer‑surplus metric, the analysis estimates that EU competition authority interventions generate an annual benefit of €18.5 billion to €29.7 billion, roughly €100‑€155 per household.
For Greece, the study reports that the Competition Commission’s activities between 2021 and 2025 produced a total estimated benefit of €714.27 million for consumers and the economy. During the same period, the Commission imposed fines amounting to €128.67 million, of which €15.8 million was transferred to the national budget. The Commission emphasized that “the enforcement of competition law is an investment with measurable results for consumers, businesses and the economy”, highlighting longer‑term gains in quality, productivity, innovation and deterrence of anti‑competitive practices.
