European Commission to archive Ceuta migration complaint
The European Commission has announced its intention to archive a complaint filed by the Zeolandia Association regarding the management of the mass migration event in Ceuta. The complaint, originally submitted on August 3, alleged that the Spanish government failed to protect the European Union's external borders and failed to provide adequate early warnings during the influx of migrants on July 30 and 31.
Angelina Gros, head of the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, stated that while significant challenges remain, the Commission must consider that governments faced “considerable uncertainty” as the events unfolded. She noted that Spain took measures to respond to the crisis as it developed.
To support border management, the European Commission is providing Spain with €114.7 million in funding. This includes €82.7 million from the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund and €32 million from the Border Management and Visa Instrument. Additionally, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has responded to Spain's request for operational support to reinforce assistance for Spanish authorities.
