EU to provide €200 million in funding for Greenland

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is scheduled to visit Nuuk, Greenland, on September 6 and 7 to strengthen ties between the EU and the Arctic territory. During the visit, she is expected to announce a new €200 million funding package for the 2026-2027 period.

The investment will target critical sectors including critical raw materials, renewable energy, subsea cables, satellite communications, and data centers. A portion of the funds will also be directed toward improving Greenland's administrative capacity. This new package builds upon the €225 million already allocated from the 2021-2027 EU budget, with proposals to increase support to €530 million for the 2028-2034 period.

The visit, which includes meetings with Greenlandic Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, aims to deepen strategic cooperation in the Arctic. This move comes amid heightened geopolitical interest in the region due to Greenland's mineral wealth and its strategic location. The EU seeks to secure access to essential raw materials while reinforcing its presence in the Arctic following previous interest from the United States in the territory.
