European defense spending surges with record Spanish budget and major UK army investment

Spain's defence and industry programmes reached a record 23.33 billion euros in 2025, a 46.5% increase over the previous year. Almost three‑quarters of the spending was managed by the Ministry of Defence, while the Ministry of Industry and Tourism funded the defence industry, whose financing almost quadrupled. The budget also saw a 22.6% rise in specific defence programmes and a 34.9% jump in real investments, driven largely by equipment acquisitions for the armed forces.

The United Kingdom plans to allocate 22.5 billion euros to its army from 2024 through 2030. The investment focuses on modernising armoured and mechanised forces, including new 8×8 Boxer vehicles, Challenger 3 tanks, Ajax combat vehicles, a light off‑road vehicle to replace the Land Rover, and the ASGARD reconnaissance project. Additional funds target artillery, long‑range rocket launchers, ISTAR systems, drones, and ground‑based air‑defence capabilities, reflecting lessons from the Ukrainian conflict.

Both countries are boosting defence capabilities and industrial capacity amid broader European security concerns.
