Erion Veliaj: European Democrats raise concerns over Tirana Mayor's detention
The European Democrats (EDP/PDE) in the European Parliament have expressed serious concern regarding the prolonged pre-trial detention of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj. Veliaj has been held in custody since February 10, 2025, amid corruption allegations that were officially communicated to him in July 2025.
The political group stated that the case is “deeply concerning for Albanian democracy” and called on Albanian authorities to respect the rule of law, the presumption of innocence, and the principle of proportionality. They emphasized that for Albania to achieve a European future, justice must be administered with impartiality and respect for fundamental rights.
In May 2025, the Constitutional Court of Albania overturned a decision by the Supreme Court, ordering a review of the detention measure due to concerns regarding its proportionality relative to Veliaj’s mandate as a democratically elected official. Additionally, the B40 organization, a cooperation of Balkan mayors, has previously called for his release.
