Germany and Austria expand large-scale battery storage projects

Major battery energy storage projects are advancing in Germany and Austria to support renewable energy integration. In Boxberg, construction has begun on the GigaBattery Boxberg 400, one of Europe’s largest storage facilities. Developed by LEAG Clean Power GmbH in partnership with Siemens Energy and HyperStrong, the project features a 400 MW connection capacity and 1,600 MWh of storage capacity, intended to stabilize the grid by absorbing excess wind and solar power.

In Stendal, Saxony-Anhalt, SUNOTEC is progressing with a 100 MW/441 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS). The project is expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2027 and will serve as a significant addition to Germany’s expanding energy infrastructure.

In Austria, Salzburg AG is planning to expand its energy network with large-scale accumulators. The first project is slated for the Nord heating power plant, involving seven battery containers with a 30 MWh capacity to manage daily fluctuations in solar and wind energy production.
