European food safety and animal welfare regulations under review

A recent epidemiological assessment has highlighted the risks of contaminated poultry, specifically regarding a salmonella outbreak that began in 2021. Linked to contaminated frozen chicken breast, the outbreak affected seven countries, resulting in 300 illnesses, 23 hospitalizations, and one death. The incident underscores the logistical and economic challenges producers face in balancing continuous production with the necessity of rapid microbiological testing to ensure food safety.

Separately, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is investigating the health and welfare risks associated with extreme physical traits in dogs and cats. Following a new EU regulation on pet welfare and traceability, experts are discussing how to scientifically measure the risks posed by features such as short muzzles, flat faces, and shortened limbs. These traits can restrict breathing and movement, potentially leading to chronic pain and reduced quality of life. The goal is to establish criteria to prevent the transmission of harmful hereditary traits through breeding.
